fire temple trouble

I have a door that will not open when i kill the enemy in it. it is two rooms right before the boss key when you have the red eye monster, with the two blocks that shoot fireballs at you. I can kill him, but can not open the door (shutter style) no matter what i do. Kinda of a game- ender if i can not open it because i can not get eh boss key then. any ideas?
